He's one small mouse on one very big adventure...
April 21, 2006 - Laguna Beach, CA - The Laguna Playhouse will present STUART LITTLE, by E.B. White as part of its THEATEREACH Program which is participating in the 2006 Imagination Celebration. STUART LITTLE will have one performance on Saturday, May 6 at 10am at the Moulton Theatre, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.
Stuart Little is no ordinary mouse. Born into a family of humans, he lives in New York City with his parents, older brother George and a cat name Snowbell. Though shy and thoughtful, Stuart is also a great lover of adventure. He captains a sailing ship in a boat race in Central Park, learns how to drive a car, teaches school, and meets a special friend, Margalo, a bird.
E.B. White was born in Mount Vernon, New York in 1899. In 1921, he graduated from Cornell University. After working in New York for a year, he traveled around. For five or six years, he tried different jobs. Finally he joined the staff of The New Yorker magazine. This seemed to be the right job for him, for he worked there until 1938, doing several articles a week for the new magazine, including his essays, poems, sketches, and editorials. In 1938, E.B. White decided to move to the country. He had a farm with animals, and from these animals he was inspired to write some of his books.
He started Stuart Little to attempt to amuse his six-year-old niece, but by the time he had finished, she was no longer a little girl. E.B. White received many awards, including the 1971 National Medal for Literature, the Presidential Medal for Freedom (given to him by President John F. Kennedy), and the National Institute of Arts and Letters' Gold Medal for Essays and Criticism. After many years of hard work, E.B. White died on October 1, 1985.
ABOUT THEATREACH
THEATREACH is a touring program of The Laguna Playhouse that brings professional productions into area schools. The plays are one-hour stage adaptations of books included in the K-6 literature and history school curriculum. The content is similar to G-rated films. Teachers are provided with study guides in advance and post-performance question and answer sessions further enrich the educational value of the visit. Related student and teacher workshops may also be booked.
THEATREACH productions are typically toured in pairs, two during the fall for about eight weeks and a different two for a longer period in the winter/spring, usually about 12 weeks. Each week, as many as nine performances are offered in elementary and middle schools, primarily in Orange County but also in Los Angeles, San Diego and Riverside Counties. A single company of actors performs each set of two alternating plays for an annual total of as many as 150 shows.
No other company in the region offers a curriculum-based professional theatre-touring program. Our THEATREACH program runs at full capacity. Tours are often over-subscribed, creating a waiting list for schools requesting performances. How can educators inspire students to want to read? A most effective way is to bring a book to life. The Laguna Playhouse THEATREACH program is doing this with their outstanding plays. I have seen all three and they are exciting to watch, educational, and professionally done. I highly recommend this educational outreach program; administrators, teachers, and students will not be disappointed.
Arts Orange County (Arts OC) and the Imagination Celebration of Orange County merged in September of 2005. The month-long arts festival for families and children is now under the management of Arts OC. Building on everything the arts council has been about for the past decade, this family arts festival provides a more public platform for cultivating creativity in our community. For the past twenty years, the Imagination Celebration has been dedicated to engaging children and families in the arts and was founded by the Orange County Performing Arts Center on a model developed by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Only five other cities in the United States are approved as official sites by the Kennedy Center: Salt Lake City, Dallas, Forth Worth, Colorado Springs and Seattle.
In Orange County, the Imagination Celebration enters its 21st year and has played a major role to spark imagination and creativity in an entire generation of Orange County children. The Laguna Playhouse is a proud participant of the Imagination Celebration of Orange County.
STUART LITTLE will have one performance on Saturday, May 6 at 10am at the Laguna Playhouse,
606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach (next to the Festival of the Arts Grounds). Ticket prices are $5.00 General Seating.
