THE LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE PARTNERS WITH ARTS ORANGE COUNTY AND ORANGE COUNTY FOOD BANK FOR “ARTS CAN” FOOD DRIVE MARCH 10 - 31
LAGUNA BEACH, CA – March 10, 2009 – We all know that the arts feed the soul. This month, the arts – and The Laguna Playhouse - are also feeding the hungry.
The Laguna Playhouse is joining more then 20 other arts organizations throughout Orange County to hold a three-week food drive March 10 - 31. The campaign, entitled Arts Can, is being coordinated by Arts Orange County in tandem with the Orange County Food Bank.
According to Arts Orange County Executive Director Richard Stein, the needs of those less fortunate are now more acute than ever. Thousands of Orange County residents are going hungry, and social service agencies are straining to meet an unprecedented demand for food.
“We celebrate that the arts community has united to collect food for those suffering from our worst financial crisis in decades,” says Mark Lowry, director of the Orange County Food Bank. “Arts organizations are exhibiting the same passion and creativity in organizing the Arts Can Food Drive as they reflect in their art.”
The Laguna Playhouse has placed an Arts Can collection bin in its lobby so that patrons can contribute when they come to see the Playhouse’s current production, Ella, which runs through March 22. Those who do bring canned goods to a performance will receive a voucher good for one non-alcoholic beverage at the lobby bar. And through March 31, patrons may also bring canned goods when they come to the box office to purchase tickets for future shows.
Most needed items include: canned meats (chili, stew, tuna, etc), canned fruit, canned vegetables, dry foods (beans, rice, pasta, etc), peanut butter, personal care items.
“We’re also encouraging The Laguna Playhouse staff to contribute canned items,” says The Playhouse’s Managing Director Karen Wood. “Our seemingly small gesture actually plays a big part in helping to feed the hungry in Orange County.”
