Looking for HomespacerLOOKING FOR HOME A Story about the Orphan Trains

November 4 – 13, 2011

Book, Music & Lyrics by Mary Murfitt
Musical Direction by Diane King Vann
Choreography by K.C. Gussler
Directed by Donna Inglima

Looking For Home is a new musical that examines the historical railroad transporting of orphaned children from the streets of New York City to the Great Plains. These “orphan trains” ran from 1856 to 1930 and it’s estimated that over 200,000 children were relocated or “placed out” by the Children’s Aid Society or similar organizations.

This World Premiere beautifully follows the true story of 11 year old Anna Hoffman and her siblings who were successfully “placed” in a small town in Kansas in 1923. This is a heartwarming story about courage and the healing powers that make a family…home.

Suitable for ages 5 and up.

Hansel and Gretel and CinderellespacerHansel and Gretel and Cinderella

February 24 – March 4, 2012

By William Glennon
Directed by Kelly Herman

Two Enchanting Classic Fairy Tales told a-new! Hansel and Gretel is the story of two children left in the forest by their mother who has been put under a spell. With the help of the Bird and the Gnome, the children outwit the wicked witch who has imprisoned them and is fattening up Hansel to eat!

Cinderella has a step mother and two step sisters who make her do all the work in the house. When they go off to the Prince’s Ball, Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother. Through kindness and a little magic, her Fairy Godmother makes it possible for Cinderella to go to the ball and win the heart of the young Prince.

Suitable for ages 5 and up.

Two things make the Youth Theatre Season unique in the region. First, the productions are directed and designed by theatre professionals and fully-mounted with the Playhouse’s technical resources. Second, the cast and staff for each production is drawn principally from our Youth Conservatory Program. Casting is almost always “age-appropriate.” Young people play young roles. Local amateur actors generally play the adult roles but fully professional Equity guest artists may also be cast.

The content of the plays is typically similar to G-rated or PG-rated films. To ease any parental concerns we explain the content in advance marketing materials and at point of ticket purchase.

And feel free to join our mailing list as well, and we'll keep you posted on upcoming Youth Theatre programs, performances and events..
